In March 2024, members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem’s Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy embarked on a deeply moving pilgrimage to the Holy Land. From March 4 to 15, pilgrims journeyed through sacred sites, retracing the footsteps of Jesus Christ in a profound experience of faith, history, and community.
Throughout the pilgrimage, participants visited some of the most meaningful locations in Christian tradition. Highlights of the journey included:
- Solemn Entry into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (subject to confirmation): A reverent and symbolic entrance into the most sacred site in Christianity, marking a pinnacle moment for many pilgrims.
- Audience with the Latin Patriarch: A memorable encounter with the head of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, offering insight into the living Christian presence in the region.
- Visits to Akko (Acre) and Haifa: Exploring ancient coastal cities with layers of religious and cultural significance.
- Local Olive Oil Producer: Pilgrims enjoyed a private olive oil tasting while learning about traditional agriculture and its ties to biblical life.
- Magdala Center Tour: A guided experience through the archaeological site believed to be the hometown of Mary Magdalene, rich in spiritual and historical reflection.
- Lodging in Bethlehem: Staying in the city of Jesus’ birth provided a unique opportunity for prayer and connection in a place central to the Christian story.
- Visit to Beit Jala Seminary: The group met with seminarians, witnessing firsthand the formation of future priests in the Holy Land.
- Visit to a Local Charity: Pilgrims engaged with one of the charitable initiatives supported by the Lieutenancy, deepening their understanding of service and solidarity in the region.
A Journey of Faith and Fellowship
More than a tour of historic sites, this pilgrimage was a journey of prayer, learning, and fellowship. With each Mass celebrated, site visited, and story shared, participants were reminded of the timeless truths of the Gospel and the continuing witness of the Church in the land where it all began.
