The Holy Land, encompassing modern-day Israel, Palestine, and parts of Jordan and Lebanon, is sacred ground for Christians across the world. This land is where Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, ministered in towns such as Nazareth and Capernaum, performed miracles along the Sea of Galilee, was crucified on Golgotha, and rose from the dead in Jerusalem. Jerusalem, in particular, holds a central place in Christian devotion. It is home to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to contain both the site of Christ’s crucifixion and His empty tomb. Since the 4th century, when Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena identified these sacred locations, the church has been the heart of Christian pilgrimage. It remains a symbol of the Resurrection and a beacon of faith for believers today.

Often called the “Fifth Gospel,” the Holy Land allows Christians to experience the Gospels in a vivid and personal way. Standing in the Garden of Gethsemane, walking the Via Dolorosa, or witnessing the sunrise over the Sea of Galilee brings the Scriptures to life in a profound and unforgettable manner.

Yet even amid this sacred history, Christians in the Holy Land face serious challenges. Ongoing political tension, economic instability, and the emigration of young families have reduced the Christian population significantly. The once-thriving communities that sustained holy sites and traditions are shrinking, and their future remains uncertain. Organizations such as the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land work to address these issues and support the Christian presence through education, housing, and job creation.

For members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, the Holy Land is not only a destination of pilgrimage, but a focus of spiritual and charitable commitment. The Order supports the Latin Patriarchate and other Church institutions, preserving Christian heritage and promoting peace and justice in the land where Christianity began.
