During the Mass celebrated on April 21 by Cardinal Fernando Filoni to open the Spring Meeting of the Grand Magisterium, participants prayed in particular for the repose of the soul of the Order’s Chancellor Emeritus, Ivan Rebernik, who had passed away a few days earlier.

Diocese of Richmond Celebrates Chrism Mass, Emphasizing Hope and Unity
On April 14, 2025, the Diocese of Richmond held its annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Presided over by Bishop Barry C. Knestout, the Mass brought together approximately 130 priests, numerous deacons, and around 800 lay faithful.
The Chrism Mass is a significant liturgical event where the bishop blesses the holy oils used in sacraments throughout the year. It also serves as an occasion for priests to renew their vows of service. In his homily, Bishop Knestout connected the themes of the Mass to the Jubilee Year of Hope, urging the faithful to be bearers of hope in their communities.
The Diocese also recognized the contributions of Catholic educators during this period, honoring 23 individuals for their dedication to faith-based education. These educators, representing various diocesan schools, were celebrated for their commitment to nurturing the spiritual and academic growth of their students .
Through these events, the Diocese of Richmond continues to strengthen its community bonds, emphasizing the importance of faith, service, and unity in its mission.
Diocese of Arlington Mourns Pope Francis and Reflects on His Legacy
The Diocese of Arlington joined the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis in April 2025.Bishop Michael F. Burbidge led the faithful in prayers and reflections, honoring the Pope’s legacy of humility, compassion, and dedication to the marginalized.
In his statement, Bishop Burbidge highlighted Pope Francis’s commitment to missionary discipleship and his call for the Church to be a field hospital for those in need. He emphasized the Pope’s role in encouraging Catholics to live out the joy of the Gospel and to accompany those on the peripheries of society.
The Diocese held a memorial Mass at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, allowing parishioners to gather in prayer and remembrance. The liturgy served as a moment of unity and reflection, celebrating the life and teachings of Pope Francis.
As the Church looks forward, the Diocese of Arlington remains inspired by Pope Francis’s example, striving to embody his vision of a compassionate and inclusive Church.
Archdiocese of Baltimore Advances ‘Seek the City to Come’ Initiative Amid Parish Reconfigurations
In a significant move to revitalize parish life, the Archdiocese of Baltimore has been actively implementing its “Seek the City to Come” initiative. Launched in 2022, this pastoral plan aims to address changing demographics and resource challenges by consolidating 61 parishes into 30 worship sites across Baltimore City and nearby communities.
Archbishop William E. Lori emphasized that this restructuring is not merely about reducing numbers but about fostering vibrant, evangelizing communities. The initiative seeks to create parishes that are well-positioned to serve their neighborhoods effectively, focusing on missionary discipleship and community engagement.
However, the process has faced challenges. Some parishioners and advocates have expressed concerns over the closures, particularly when Vatican directives have called for the reopening of certain parishes. In one instance, the Archdiocese faced criticism for not reopening a parish despite a Vatican order, leading to debates about adherence to ecclesiastical authority and the needs of local communities.
Despite these hurdles, the Archdiocese remains committed to its vision. The initiative’s success will depend on continued dialogue with parishioners, transparent decision-making, and a shared commitment to revitalizing the Catholic presence in Baltimore.
Investiture Weekend 2024 Recap: Honoring Our Legacy in Richmond, Virginia
The 2024 Annual Investiture Weekend, held from October 23 to 27 in Richmond, Virginia, was a deeply moving and spiritually enriching experience for the Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy. Hosted by the Diocese of Richmond, the weekend honored the historical and spiritual legacy of Catholicism in the region while renewing our collective commitment to the mission of the Order.
The gathering commenced on Wednesday evening with a memorable cocktail reception at the historic Virginia House, a structure originally built in 1119 as a priory of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and later transported from Warwick, England. The setting, rich in symbolism and history, offered an ideal beginning to a weekend grounded in faith, heritage, and community.
On Thursday, participants made a pilgrimage to Jamestowne, where they explored the early history of Catholicism in Virginia. Reflections centered on the Spanish Virginia Martyrs of 1570 and included a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. This journey invited a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and devotion that laid the foundations of the faith in the region.
Friday’s Memorial Mass at the Pro-Cathedral of Saint Peter was followed by the Vigil Service at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. A Eucharistic Procession through the Cathedral grounds deepened the reverent atmosphere, and the evening concluded with a warm reception at the elegant Jefferson Hotel.
Saturday brought the most anticipated moment of the weekend, the Rite and Mass of Investiture at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The solemnity of the ceremony and the beauty of the liturgy reaffirmed the Order’s mission and united the attendees in purpose. That evening, the Gala Dinner at The Jefferson Hotel served as a joyful celebration of our growing fellowship.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with Mass offered at either the Pro-Cathedral of Saint Peter or the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, bringing a fitting close to a meaningful weekend of reflection, service, and renewal.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Diocese of Richmond, our hosts, and all who made the weekend possible through their generosity, planning, and prayerful presence.
Investiture Weekend 2023 Recap: A Spirit of Fellowship in Nashville
The 2023 Investiture Weekend, hosted by the Diocese of Nashville from October 25 to 29, brought together members of the Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy for a remarkable celebration of faith, service, and community. The city of Nashville offered a warm welcome, and the grace-filled events of the weekend reflected the devotion and commitment of all who participated.
The weekend began on Wednesday evening with a reception hosted by the local Knights and Dames of the Diocese of Nashville, setting the tone for the days to follow. Thursday’s schedule included important meetings and rehearsals for those being Invested or Promoted, followed by a moving pilgrimage to the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia. That day concluded with a Memorial Mass, inviting prayerful reflection and remembrance.
Friday offered a time of deep spiritual renewal during the Discernment and Renewal Retreat. Leaders of the Lieutenancy gathered for a meeting of Officers and Section Presidents to discuss ongoing efforts and future plans. That evening, the Vigil Service at the Cathedral of the Incarnation united attendees in prayer before a reception that fostered joyful fellowship.
Saturday was the pinnacle of the weekend. Beginning with a session on the Life of the Order and the Lieutenancy, the day culminated in the Rite and Mass of Investiture at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. The Investiture was a powerful witness to our shared mission and Catholic identity. The Annual Lieutenancy Dinner that followed was a joyful celebration of our growing community.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with a final Mass, drawing to a close a memorable and spirit-filled gathering. We extend our sincere thanks to the Diocese of Nashville, the Cathedral clergy, the Dominican Sisters, and all those who contributed to making this event a meaningful experience for all.
Investiture Weekend 2025 Recap: A Spirit-Filled Gathering in Wheeling
The 2025 Investiture Weekend in Wheeling, West Virginia, brought together Knights, Dames, and Chaplains in a moving and spiritually enriching celebration of faith, service, and unity. Hosted by the Diocese of Wheeling–Charleston, the weekend was marked by beautiful liturgies, insightful reflections, and heartfelt fellowship.
Our gathering began with a Memorial Mass for Pope Francis, where we honored the legacy of a man whose humility, mercy, and unwavering hope shaped the Church profoundly. This was followed by a powerful Vigil Service at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. The music of the Cathedral choir elevated the liturgies with grace and reverence, setting the tone for a weekend of deep spiritual engagement.
The “Reflections on Hope” series drew from Spes Non Confundit, the Bull of Indiction for the Jubilee Year, guiding us through meaningful themes presented by our Knight Chaplains. These meditations—A Word of Hope, A Journey of Hope, Signs of Hope, Appeals for Hope, and Anchored in Hope—offered a profound journey through the theological dimensions of hope.
We were also privileged to hear from Dr. Scott Hahn, whose talk The Fourth Cup offered valuable insights into the mystery of the Eucharist and the mission of the Church. Many joined the early morning livestream of the Holy Father’s funeral in the ballroom, a solemn but unifying experience of prayer and mourning.
The Annual Meeting offered important updates on the Order’s mission, growth, and ongoing charitable initiatives. The weekend culminated in the Investiture Ceremony and Mass, a stirring celebration of our Catholic identity and our shared commitment to the Holy Land and the Church.
Our deepest thanks go to Bishop Mark Brennan, KC*HS, the Cathedral staff, and the local Knights and Dames for their meticulous planning and warm hospitality. The peaceful charm of Wheeling provided a reflective and intimate backdrop for our time together.
As we look ahead to future endeavors, the unity and dedication displayed in Wheeling will continue to inspire and guide our mission.
Fátima, Lourdes & Shrines of Spain (September 17 – 28, 2023)
From September 17 to 28, 2023, the EOHSJ Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy offered a pilgrimage to some of the most revered Marian shrines in Europe.
Our pilgrimage included sites such as:
- Fátima, Portugal: Site of the 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children.
- Lourdes, France: Known for the Marian apparitions to Saint Bernadette and its healing waters.
- Shrines in Spain: Visits may include Santiago de Compostela, the resting place of Saint James the Apostle, and other significant religious sites.
These sacred sites offer pilgrims a chance for prayer, reflection, and participation in local religious traditions, enhancing their spiritual journey.
Celtic Highlights Tour (June 19 – July 1, 2023)
The EOHSJ Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy organized a 13-day Celtic Highlights Tour from June 19 to July 1, 2023. This journey offered participants an opportunity to explore the rich Christian heritage of the Celtic lands.
Journey Overview
We visited significant religious and historical sites in Ireland, Scotland, and England, such as:
- Ancient monasteries and cathedrals
- Sites associated with early Christian saints
- Cultural landmarks reflecting the Celtic Christian tradition
These journeys are designed to deepen the spiritual lives of participants through immersion in the history and traditions of the Church in the British Isles.
