In September 2022, members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem’s Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy embarked on a profound pilgrimage to witness the renowned Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria, Germany. This decennial event, deeply rooted in history and faith, provided pilgrims with a unique opportunity to reflect on the Passion of Christ in a setting steeped in tradition.

The Oberammergau Passion Play has been performed since 1634, originating from a vow made by the villagers of Oberammergau during a devastating plague. They promised to reenact the Passion of Christ every ten years if their village was spared further deaths. Honoring this pledge, the play has become a symbol of faith and perseverance, drawing audiences worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV’s Papacy Brings Hope to Gaza’s Christians

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was inaugurated as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church on May 18, 2025. As the first American and second Latin American pope, his diverse background and commitment to social justice have inspired hope among many, including the Christian community in Gaza.

In his inaugural Mass at St. Peter’s Square, attended by over 200,000 people including global leaders, Pope Leo XIV emphasized themes of unity, peace, and love. He called for an end to global hatred, violence, and exploitation, and expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging for peace and support for the affected communities.

Building on the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV has pledged to continue advocating for social justice, poverty alleviation, and environmental protection. His commitment to these issues resonates with the Christian community in Gaza, who face ongoing challenges amid regional conflicts.

A Historic Ecumenical Service Unites London and Jerusalem

Commemorating 1,700 Years Since the Council of Nicaea

On May 20, 2025, Christian leaders and faithful gathered simultaneously at the Temple Church in London and the Co-Cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in Jerusalem to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. This historic event, organized by Friends of the Holy Land, was live-streamed between the two cities, symbolizing unity and shared faith across continents.

The service brought together leaders from various Christian denominations, including Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant traditions. Notable participants included Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster; The Rt Rev. Archbishop Hosam Naoum of the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem; and His Beatitude Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem. The multilingual service featured prayers and readings in English, Greek, Latin, Aramaic, and Church Slavonic, reflecting the rich tapestry of Christian liturgical traditions.
